What is a sacrament?

An efficacious and visible sign of God's invisible grace, instituted by Christ

A sacrament is an outward sign that truly conveys God's grace, instituted by Christ. This means it’s something you can see or do that actually brings grace into our lives, not just a reminder or symbol. The sign is efficacious, meaning it accomplishes what it signifies because Christ gave the Church these rites to convey His life and grace to believers. It’s not simply a symbolic ritual with no effect, nor a purely human tradition or a local festival; it’s a sacred action established by Jesus to communicate grace to us. For example, Baptism uses water to signify cleansing from sin and new life in Christ, and the Eucharist feeds our souls with Jesus’ presence.
